Websters dictionary defines hegemony as, "leadership exercised by one state, esp. one in a federation of states." From the greek: Hegimonikos
Some act as though the United States is the source of all evil, poverty, and oppression in the world. The reality is that the United States is made up of human beings and poverty, evil, and oppression have existed from the dawn of time. The fact is that if you were to pick a nation out of all the nations that have existed throughout history the United States would be the most benevolent 'oppressive power' that the world has ever seen.
Beside which the US doesn't oppress anyone in the strict sense of the term.
Where does this term regarding the hegemony of the US originate? I submit to you that it is marxist terminology. Those who use it are actually parroting their marxist ideology and using another synonym for imperialism.
Google the word hegemony. Besides your normal english dictionary definition, you will find that the word hegemony is mostly used in marxist literature.
A very important influence on the development of cultural studies was the the Italian Marxist Gramsci and his notion of bourgeois cultural hegemony. Although Gramsci died while Althusser was still a student, his influence was felt later because his Selections from the Prison Notebooks were not translated until 1971. 'Hegemony' in this case means the success of the dominant classes in presenting their definition of reality, their view of the world, in such a way that it is accepted by other classes as 'common sense'. The general 'consensus' is that it is the only sensible way of seeing the world. Any groups who present an alternative view are therefore marginalized: Gramsci: Hegemony
